Les Presses de l’Université de Montréal

When Université de Montréal created Les Presses de l’Université de Montréal (PUM) in 1962, its objective was to disseminate research. PUM’s fundamental mission is to spread knowledge as widely as possible and to serve both the academic community and society in general.

The publisher’s objectives are as follows:

  1. to disseminate knowledge and conclusions of academic research through books, scholarly journals, and electronic publications;
  2. to publish scholarly editions of classical works from the literary heritage of Québec;
  3. to convey scientific knowledge (particularly in the areas of art and literature) to as broad an audience as possible; and
  4. to participate in public debate through relevant publications (literary and other essays) and cultural events.

At an average rate of more than fifty new titles per year, PUM has so far published over 2,100 titles and at least as many authors. A large proportion of these titles are still available, thanks in part to the leap into digital technology taken by PUM several years ago. The PUM catalogue is regularly updated; it contains more than 925 active titles, most of which are also available in various digital formats.

PUM’s publications touch on a wide array of subjects such as literature, history, political and social sciences, and health. PUM publishes and distributes four scholarly journals (Criminologie, Études françaises, Meta, Sociologie et Sociétés) subjected to a peer-reviewed adjudication process and whose high quality has repeatedly been recognized by specialized committees of provincial and federal research funding agencies. Through its journals, PUM contributes to the dissemination of research in Québec and Canada and enjoys a prominent reputation internationally.
